I like to let people know the benefits of using the right credit card at the right moment.

I understand that as you’re checking out at the grocery, delving into the pros of using credit card A versus credit card B to pay the bill is not high on your priority list, especially after making harrowing decisions such as which tomato is most luscious.

And when you’re pressured to book a great deal in the nick of time for your upcoming flight, you may not be focused enough to grab one credit card out of your wallet over another.

But using the proper credit card when paying for groceries or booking travel accommodations, translates to points. And points translate to money! Or free trips! So it may be worth your while to take that extra minute to pick the best card to use while picking up your groceries or when you plan a trip away, even if it is just so you can afford more vacation in the future with all the points you’ll earn. Because you deserve that.

Here are some credit card options that are best for travel or grocery store trips due to the cashback you earn. If you have the proper credit card in your wallet it is easier to benefit from it. Especially if you know when to use what.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred card

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred card is right now one of the best credit cards to use forgroceries. For every dollar you spend at a U.S. supermarket, you earn 6% cashback, on up to $6,000 per year!

The card has an annual fee of $95 but this card has more awesome perks that make it all worth it, such as the 90-day return protection which lets you return purchases even past the store policy.

So that’s my grocery pick #1.

Citi Premier Card

The Citi Premier card is another fave because you earn cashback on groceries and on travel. Swipe at the grocery and earn 3 points per dollar spent, then swipe for airfare or hotels and get 3 points for these purchases as well. Swipe again to fill your car up and get 3 points per dollar, as you drive down to the restaurant of your choice and swipe there for another 3 points on restaurant purchases.

Is that not a dream, to earn points at every stop of your way?

According to this credit card database, 76% of applicants were approved for the Citi Premier card so your chances are good, and the average credit limit approved for is $5,894, which allows for enough swiping.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred card

Here’s another good card for groceries and travel. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, you can earn 3 points for every dollar you spend on online groceries, and 2 points on travel.

You also get travel benefits that make this card a great option; trip cancellation insurance (I think that’s a huge benefit for moms), lost luggage reimbursement, baggage delay insurance, worldwide primary auto rental collision insurance, and more.

Another great perk is the $50 hotel credit. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred you get a $50 annual hotel credit if you book your  hotel stay through the Chase Travel portal. Enjoy it!
