beach tips2

School is almost out and for many families that means vacation time! If your vacation includes time at the beach, you will want to check out this list of tips for a fun day at the beach. We head to the beach every Wednesday during the summer to break up the week.

1. Sun Safety: Living in Florida, we know that sunscreen is very important. There are other precautions we can also take for added protection. Invest in a beach umbrella. If you’re at the beach as much as our family, an umbrella or a small canopy tent can really come in handy. Another great way to protect the kids from the sun is surf shirts with UV protection. My boys always wear swim shirts when we are in the pool or at the beach. When the kids are out of the water, consider using a hat. And don’t forget about your eyes! Bring everyone a pair of sunglasses.

2. Hydration: Staying hydrated is key. Pack a cooler with ice, water, and Gatorade along with fresh fruits and snacks. It will save you money and keep everyone happy and hydrated.

3. Make Rules: When we arrive at the beach, we immediately sit the kids down and explain a few simple rules. Everyone, even our oldest who is 13, must let an adult know when they are heading down to the water. If you have multiple children, this is extremely important. Point out the lifeguard stations. Let everyone know how far they are allowed to go into the water. Find a landmark near where you are on the beach. It’s easy for the waves and undertow to move kids (and adults) down the beach. It’s scary for kids when they get out of the water only to notice they are lost. Point out a large landmark they can look for so they don’t lose you. Obviously, this would be for older children that can safely be in the water without an adult.

4. Have fun: The beach is so much fun for kids. I remember quite a few last minute trips to the beach where we forgot sand toys and water toys. This was never an issue because we always found so many things to keep the kids busy. Hunt for shells, dig holes, look for sand fleas, try to catch minnows, get buried up to your neck (make sure you are far from the waves), use shells to dig, and of course swim. Those are just a few of the many things you can do without ever pulling out a toy!

5. Unplug: Moms and dads can have fun too. Bring your favorite book and read while the kids play in the sand next to you. If you must bring your cell phone, put it at the bottom of your beach bag so you’re not tempted to check emails or work! Be there and cherish every moment with the kiddos.

  1. The most important key note mentioned in this blog is rules. If I went to the beach with my dog and my kids and had no rules it would be chaos. Of course trying to get my youngster to put on sunscreen can be chaos too.
