Parents everywhere rejoice when it is back to school time. While we will miss our littles while they are gone during the day, most of us are relievedย to finally be free of the relentless requests for snacks, constant need to entertain them and stress of managing work, the house and the kids.

While planning back to school content for Orlando Mom, I was shocked to come across this study done by the CDC that ultimately found that back to school time means increased alcohol consumption amongst parents.

The CDC surveyed 1,290 parents or legal guardians of school-age children up to age 12 between October and November of 2021. Overall, almost half โ€” 46.6% โ€” of all parents reported increased levels of stress, 16.5% said they were using more drugs or alcohol.

Sonia Kahlon is helping women get sober online with EverBlume and she provided these tips to help parents when it comes to back to school time stress management, would should ultimately reduce excessive alcohol consumption. Tips & Resources:

  1. The journey to a healthier relationship with alcohol is unique for each individual. Be patient with yourself, and don’t hesitate to seek help and support from your loved ones and the support group you join.
  2. Find alternative stress-relief methods: Instead of turning to alcohol when youโ€™re stressed or overwhelmed, explore healthier ways to cope. Exercise, meditation, hobbies, or spending quality time with loved ones can help you manage stress. Feel free to think outside of the box!
  3. Create a support network: Including your partner, share your intentions with close friends and family members. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network can help keep you accountable and motivated.
  4. Stay away from triggers: Identify situations that tempt you to drink excessively, and try to avoid them. If you know certain social gatherings or environments lead to overindulgence, opt for healthier alternatives until you feel ready to be in those situations.
  5. Join a support group: Look for support groups that focus on women seeking to improve their relationship with alcohol. Connecting with others who share similar experiences can be motivating and reassuring.
  6. Reward yourself for progress: Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. When you successfully adhere to your boundaries or overcome challenges, reward yourself with anything that brings you joy – candles, facemasks, a night of Netflix and snacks – remember, you are saving so much money by not drinking!
