Do you look forward to or dread family photos? We have all felt both happiness and dread in thinking about scheduling, outfit choices, getting ready, and finally capturing the right shot without a meltdown.

Mama, just saying it makes me want to take a deep breath. I’m there with you but let me tell you I love family photos and you can too! Here are a few tips and tricks I use as a mom of six to keep my sanity. But more importantly, to capture the moment because as you all know, we blink and they are grown.

  • Schedule a mini shoot: Schedule 20 to 30 minutes of actual photography is more than enough with the right photographer. They will usually grab the best pictures in the first 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Experience matters: Listen to other moms about their experiences and book with a photographer who likes kids. I recommend a fellow mom photographer.
  • Shop in your closet first: I know you shop for amazing outfits and never have a place to wear them too. Well, this is it! I buy on mom groups and or buy-sell-trade sites and then color coordinate. Some of our outfits are years old.
  • Feel amazing, look amazing: Mama, dress in what makes you feel beautiful! You deserve to be in front of the camera with your family. Don’t shy away from those photos! You are the star! This is your legacy being captured.family photos of 8 at the beach
  • Candid shots over posed pictures: I can’t say this loud enough. Your children are beautiful being themselves. If the photographer is good they will capture the magic. This way you’re not stressed about everyone saying cheese at once and you can get through the awkwardness of posing.
  • Laugh and have fun: Think about the photos you like on Pinterest or Instagram — it’s those seemingly candid shots that you wish someone would take of you with the kids and partner. Embrace those moments on photoshoot day! While posed pictures are great candid shots (in my opinion) are even better! The sillier the better the pictures! Trust the process!

Family photos can be a fun and rewarding experience, even for those who dread the process. By following these tips, you can minimize stress and ensure that you capture precious memories that you will cherish for years to come. Schedule a mini shoot, work with a photographer who loves kids, shop in your closet first, feel amazing and look amazing, focus on candid shots over posed pictures, and laugh and have fun.
