Janaury’s Book of the Month is Love Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood!

It’s hard to believe I am picking the first book for Book Club in 2024 already, it feels like only yesterday that I took over the group! I am looking forward to  changing things up this year and becoming more intentional about getting together virtually and in person to chat about books.

If you’ve been around for a while, you know that I loved Ali’s book, The Love Hypothesis – it was my favorite read for October of 2023. Her heroines are all women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and as a woman who worked in the medical field for many years, I always seem to connect with her heroines instantly.

Love Theoretically Summary:

Elsie is a theoretical physicist who is working as an adjunct professor and to make ends meet she poses as men’s girlfriends for events. One of her favorite repeat clients has a particularly skeptical brother who always seems to be around to help Elsie out of a bind. When Elsie goes to an interview for a dream job, she comes face to face with the same client’s brother… the widely hated experimental physicist who ruined the career of Elsie’s longtime academic mentor. But as Elsie and Jack spend time together, they begin to realize that everything isn’t as it seems – will their new romantic feelings for each other survive the truth?

Elsie’s journey in academics and the scientific community is unfortunately full of people making poor assumptions about her because she is a woman, being spoken down to because of her gender and being manipulated and taken for granted. Her experiences are fictional, but are real life for many women in the field.

Love Theoretically Pacing Guide:

January 3 – 8: Chapters 1 – 7

January 9 – 14: Chapters 8 – 14

January 15 – 20: Chapters 15 – 20*

January 21 – 27: Chapters 21 – the end*

I loved this book on audio. It is not a super long read on audio and I do not know how I could read as much as I do without audio books.

* Please note that explicit romance scenes occur in this book. Plan to skip sections or most of chapters 19, 21 and 22 if you would like to avoid these scenes. The romance does not take away from the overall plot.

Discussion on our book Club Facebook page starting January 28, with any in person discussion to be announced at a later date!
