I do not know what stopped me from reading The Love Hypothesis sooner. I devoured this book on audio – I could not stop listening. I truly loved the women in STEM representation. As a woman who worked (and will one day work again) in the medical field, I have felt that culture of working to belong in a male dominated field. I am a Registered Dietitian by training and while my field is mostly female, working in the medical/science field is not always welcoming to women. I loved listening to Olive and her friends work for their place in their fields and using their collective voices when faced with hardships brought on simply because they are women. To me, the representation of their struggles, while unfair, are what some women face and I think giving voice to that reality can only work to close that divide one day.
The Love Hypothesis Summary:
Olive is interviewing at universities when her nerves get the best of her, she finds herself in a university bathroom. A stranger finds her and gives her the encouragement she needs to pursue a career in the sciences. Fast forward a couple of years and Olive is settling into university life. When her friend needs a push to finally date the guy Olive once dated, Olive is determined to show her friend she’s moved on. So that is how Olive finds herself kissing Adam, the broody and grumpy professor that no one seems to get along with. They hatch a plan to fake date – Olive wants her friends to know she’s okay with them dating and Adam wants to reassure the university he is not going to leave. But as they spend more time together, Olive is having trouble finding the grumpy, stand offish professor that most people think Adam is – he is always the opposite with her. Their fake relationship takes a turn on a work conference trip in more than one way. After an intense weekend, will one of them finally admit that their relationship is anything but fake?

One explicit romance scene that can be skipped if that is your preference. The audio book does have a couple of chapters from Adam’s POV, including the explicit romance scene.
