You’ve heard of the summer slump right?! Well, 2020 has given us a new math equation.

Covid + summer slump = disaster.

At least for me and for many moms around me.

Here’s the deal, I haven’t done Algebra in years. And while I could probably figure it out with the textbook and loads of time…Wait. Stop. That’s the problem. Many schools aren’t sending home textbooks anymore so I can’t look at the lesson or back at previous lessons to see concepts that have been built upon.  Most of the homework assignments are done on-line with no explanation. And time? Please. Could I go on-line and begin searching ways to solve math problems? Sure. But what if that answer wasn’t helpful enough. Maybe it only solved without giving steps or explaining why. In the end, I’ve wasted precious time trying to help.

In steps Photomath.

My 8th grader loves Photomath and so do I! As I began thinking through how best to express how much we like to use Photomath, I decided to interview my son. All of Matt’s answers are totally his. Eyerolls were excluded from the text.

Mom:    Matt what are some of your reasons that you like Photomath?

Matt:    It’s super easy to use. I just point my camera at it and take a picture. It solves all kinds of problems. I can use it to just check to see if I have an answer right or it will show me all the steps on how to get the answer.

Mom:    Okay, so you’re not cheating right?

Matt:    Mom, stop.

Mom:    Seriously, though it is super cool because it’s helpful to know if you got an answer correct, but if you get it wrong it will show you all the steps to get you to the answer. Right?

Matt:    Ya, so I only have a workbook from school, but there’s never really enough information to help me at home. So, I can go to “Solving Steps” and it shows each individual step of the problem. Sometimes that is all I need to help me find where I went wrong, but other times I need a lot more information. Other apps or on-line helps usually only show the steps, but Photomath has more.

Mom:    Oh, so it gives more information that just the steps?

Matt:    Yes. In each “Solving Step” you also have “Explain Steps” and even more than that it has “Explain How.” The “Explain How” section will even take the problem all the way down to basic math in the problem. So since at the end of last year, we missed so much, I just need more teaching on some of the lower concepts.

Mom:    So, it actually explains the why behind each step and goes beyond that to show you how all the way down to the very basics. And the bottom line is, if you don’t understand the why part and the how part, you’re not really learning.

Matt:    It even gives definitions for words that I might not remember. Each step goes into such detail that it’s like having a teacher right there with you. It has the answers to all your questions. Also, the main calculator is super easy to use.

Mom:    Remember last week when I tried showing you how to use our scientific calculator? Fail. You’re super happy I let you download the Plus version right?

Matt:    Ya because it has so much information that I actually need to understand the problem. Also, since I understand it, and didn’t just look at something that showed the steps only, I can do homework or take a test actually knowing the information.

Mom:    And it’s a sweet deal too cuz you don’t have to listen to me going crazy trying to figure everything out and getting frustrated.

Matt:    Uh, I don’t know how I should answer that question.

I hope this interview has helped show you how Photomath has had such a huge impact for us. Photomath is so easy to use and because of its ability to actually teach and not just give the answers or show steps only, I feel confident that he’s actually learning.
