Being a sports mom is a unique and rewarding experience. It’s a role that goes far beyond cheering on my child from the sidelines. It’s about being their cheerleader, photographer, their community leader, and sometimes, their therapist. I love our sports family and can’t imagine doing life without them!

As a sports mom, I get to experience the highs and lows too. From the silent joys to the huge challenges, being a sports mom is one of my favorite roles that I get to play.

Over the years, I have been several “sport moms”:

  • dance mom
  • basketball mom
  • football mom
  • golf mom
  • baseball mom

The Joys:

  • Witnessing my child’s growth and development: I’ve seen them gain confidence, learn teamwork, problem solving and develop their skills. These are valuable lessons that extend far beyond the playing field and that are desperately needed in everyday “real life”.
  • Building a special bond with my child: Sharing the experience of practices (not anymore because dad is coach!), games, and victories (and defeats) has created lasting memories and strengthens our relationship. We always have “something” to talk about!
  • Being part of a community: We’ve met other parents and families who share our passion for sports and our child’s team. Our sports family is an extension of our family. We love supporting each other’s kids and I love the relationships we’ve built!
  • The thrill of the game: There’s nothing quite like the excitement of watching my boys compete and give it their all. Game days are SO MUCH FUN!!

The Challenges:

  • Time commitment: Practices (thank goodness I don’t have to do this anymore!), games, tournaments โ€“ they all take up a lot of time. If you’ve never been a sports mom before, be prepared to adjust your schedule and make sacrifices to support your child’s athletic endeavors.
  • Balancing emotions: We celebrate every victory, but we also need to be there to pick them up after a loss. Teaching them how to deal with both sides of the coin is an important part of being a sports mom, and one that is constantly evolving as they get older and into more competitive teams.
  • Cost: Sports can be expensive, from equipment and uniforms to travel and registration fees….the good thing is that there are so many other perks, that this one is a willing sacrifice!
  • Managing sideline behavior: It’s important to be a positive and supportive parent, even when the game gets intense. We avoid yelling at referees, coaches, and other players, BUT that doesn’t always mean that other parents play by the same set of rules. Be prepared for the wild side of parents…it can be very ugly. (We have experienced this first hand!)

Tips for Being a Great Sports Mom:

  • Focus on the fun and the learning, not just winning.
  • Be a positive role model and encourage good sportsmanship.
  • Support the coaches and officials.
  • Always be prepared for the day!
  • Celebrate your child’s effort and improvement, not just their achievements.
  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience!

Being a sports mom is a demanding but ultimately rewarding role. It’s about more than just watching a game; it’s about helping my children grow into a well-rounded, confident young men- and that is the biggest reward of them all.
