Our bedrooms are the most used room in our home…we spend a third of our days in there! Even if you have kids and go back and forth throughout the night, our bedrooms can be a place of refuge in our busy parenting world. However, it could also serve as an office or gathering spot for the family on weekend mornings. It is where we start and end our days. It is where we plan, dream, and hope – and hopefully get a good night’s rest!

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, does size matter? Is there a bedroom that is perfect in size? While you can’t really change the size of your bedroom, you can maximize it if you aren’t planning on a home remodel. Some bedrooms have limited options for bedroom furniture placement but there are still things we can do to maximize the space!

Planning your bedroom space

According to most building codes, a room that is used for sleeping should not exceed 70 square feet- this is roughly the size of a small nursery (7 X 10′). An apartment’s average bedroom is 132 square feet and a house’s average bedroom measures 219 square feet.

Your bed is the most important piece of furniture in your bedroom. Before you shop, measure your bedroom to determine the right size mattress and bed.

A king-sized mattress is recommended by most sleep doctors and coaches for couples. This allows us both to move at night freely without being disturbed (and hey, if you have little ones, it allows more space for those nights they jump in!).

Do you have enough space?

A minimum of 144 square feet (12’X12″) is required to accommodate a king-sized bed in your bedroom. For a queen-size bed, you will need at least 120 sq ft (10×12′).

You can measure how big a bed will fit in your space and still be able to move around. Next, ask yourself some questions:

  • Are there nightstands that can be placed on either side?
  • What furniture is possible to fit in the space?
  • Are you looking for more than one armoire or dresser?
  • Are you able to create a sitting area?

Do you want to watch the sun rise or set from your bed? This could influence where you place your bed. The best place to put your bed is against the wall, which is located across from the door. This headboard will be the focal point of attention in the room.

It’s not always possible to place your bed next to the door. So, take a look at the walls in your room. Are they long enough for your bed and nightstands? You can either add or remove walls. This will allow you to divide the sleeping space from the living area (if you have that amount of space). Consider placing your bed diagonally if you can. If you have a large bedroom, floating your bed in the middle could be an option. This works well with minimal furniture surrounding the bed.

Furnishing a small bedroom

Although most bedrooms have a closet, a built-in storage space for clothes is relatively recent to the bedroom. A wardrobe, armoire or closet in another room would have been sufficient for generations.

If you have a small bedroom and want to make your space more open and less cluttered, consider moving a chest or drawers into your closet. If it is large enough, buy containers that slide under your bed. Instead of a stand on the ground, hang your TV. You should also get rid of any unnecessary furniture. To create more space, a bed that has a headboard only and no footboard is best. You should also stick to lighter colors for everything, including duvet covers, curtains, and rugs, as well as furniture like chairs and tables.

Last but not least, remember to consider your mattress foundation

Although it is often overlooked, the mattress foundation is just as important as the mattress itself. A foundation can increase the comfort of your mattress by providing additional support, height, and airflow. Box springs (springs that are enclosed in a metal or wood frame) are a popular foundation option. The platform bed is solid and sturdy and can be placed on the floor. Many of these beds have built-in storage which makes them extremely useful.

An adjustable base might be something you want. You might need one if you sleep in bed, read, or have to deal with medical issues such as acid reflux, back pain, and snoring. You can raise the top and bottom of your bed with a remote control for maximum comfort.

Restonic mattresses can be adjusted to fit any base, just in case. Whatever your choices, comfort and a good night of sleep should guide you when designing or redesigning your bedroom.
