American Girl is introducing Luciana Vega, the 2018 Girl of the Year. She comes with an out-of-this-world storyline about an 11-year-old who dreams of being the first person on Mars. American Girl worked with NASA, including a task force of advisors (scientists, astronauts, and more below) who helped ensure the accuracy and authenticity of Luciana’s world—from her story and products to a STEM-based educational program in partnership with Scholastic and Space Camp.

Looking beyond her cool line of space-inspired products (like a Mars habitat and flight suit!), American Girl’s purpose behind this character is what’s most important. Luciana shows what it can mean to be a girl of strong character today, where creative thinking, collaboration, and STEM literacy provide opportunities for meaningful growth and development. Technology continues to revolutionize what we do and what we know, and Luciana is a character that can bring visibility and valuable lessons to girls at a time in their lives when they’re learning about their infinite potential to change the world.

Bringing this story to life is an all-star advisory board that includes: Dr. Ellen Stofan, former NASA Chief Scientist, Dr. Deborah Barnhart, CEO and Executive Director of the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, Maureen O’Brien, Manager of Strategic alliances at NASA, and Dr. Megan McArthur Behnken, NASA Astronaut.

To celebrate her launch, AG is hosting Luciana debut events at its retail locations nationwide on January 1. The event features interactive science demonstrations, a Moon Phase craft, galaxy-inspired treats, and a free Luciana doll tee to take home. For more details, visit americangirl.com/retail .

  1. This AG doll would be perfect for my daughter to take on our upcoming trip to the Kennedy Space Center! 🚀🔭👩🏼‍🚀

  2. My daughter is facinated by outer space and always tells me “we are so lucky that every night the moon follows us around!”

  3. Thank you, OMB, for highlighting Luciana and her story! My 6-year-old daughter is fascinated with science—and space in particular. Our visit to Kennedy Space Center last summer confirmed and deepened her interest in our universe and has only increased her desire to seek out the HOW of studying and exploring what’s “out there.” Bravo, American Girl, for creating a character with a story to mirror girls like my daughter who want to understand and engage in their environments through science (and bonus points for having her reflect our multicultural lives)!

  4. My daughter would absolutely love this doll. She’s obsessed with her baby dolls and doing anything/everything for them. This would be her first AGnif we win.

  5. My 2 year old loves the Science Museum and loves to watch videos of the planets! Such a beautiful message to send young girls with this doll!

  6. We love Luciana already! My daughter got the new catalog and went right to her saying she wants to be an astronaut when she grows up!

  7. My little one would love to win Luciana. She started kindergarten this year and science is her favorite subject. She is obsessed with space and would love her.
